AIMS

My first year at UWEC I joined UWEC's Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Security research group (AIMS) as a student researcher.

2023-2024

My first year I started work on using machine learning to analyze network logs and detect malicious traffic. After analyzing a number of network traffic datasets, we settled on using the NF-ToN-IoT-v2 dataset. We found that using ML algorithms that the authors used in their original study we could get a prediction accuracy > 98%, which was very impressive. Our next steps are using algorithms that the authors haven't used with the dataset, such as K Nearest Neighbor and Support Vector Machine, maybe even a Convolution Neural Network. Research is ongoing.

Summer of 2024

I was awarded a paid research position for the summer of 2024, and we put our ML IoT traffic classification on hold. I measured specific letter frequencies and developed a tool for monitoring the integrity of binaries on Linux.

Fall of 2024

I proposed a research project to the professor I work with on other projects, we submitted a research proposal to the UWEC Office of Research and Sponsored Programs for funding and got approved. Research will happen over this school year (2024-2025).
